- Fear of abandonment
- Issues of Control
- School difficulties
Adoption can have an emotionally damaging impact on child development. Children may not be able to cope with the knowledge that they had been rejected by their birth parents, and no amount of reassurance that their adoptive parents loved and wanted them could make up for the “severe narcissistic injury” that adoption inflicted.
“There is no way we can spare children from the emotional pain associated with adoption-related loss. Children must be allowed to experience the deep emotions associated with the loss in the context of a warm, loving, and supportive environment. They must be allowed to grieve the loss of birthparents; entering their family through the process of relinquishment; etc. Their feelings cannot be trivialized or discredited. By fully feeling the adoptee will resolve and integrate their loss.” David Brodzinsky: The Psychology of Adoption (1990).
I can help you to build true self of your adopted child or teen.
Adoption Counseling offers:
Individual Counseling and Parenting consultations for parents with adopted children and teens. Adoption Counseling encourages parents to identify and manage their frequently overwhelming emotions and relationship difficulties. The aim of individual counseling and parenting consultations is to improve the attachment relationship between parent and child, by helping parents to identify and manage their own emotional states and enabling them to be more aware of and responsive to their children’s needs, improve their “ability to undertake parental role obligations without neurotic conflict.”
